Spinach Potato Tots- suitable for 7 month baby & up
Spinach potato tots are a healthy, convenient, and delicious way to introduce vegetables and textures to your baby while fostering independence through baby-led weaning (BLW). They are so easy to prepare, made with just 3 simple ingredients! Potato, spinach & cheese! Packed with greens, creamy potatoes, and the savory richness of cheese, these tots are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. They are easy for babies to chew and a great BLW recipe or for little one’s that are transitioning from puree’s to solids. These delicious bites are freezer-friendly, and versatile enough to serve as a snack, lunchbox addition, or even a fun appetizer at gatherings.
Nutritional Benefits:
- Spinach: A superfood loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, iron, calcium, and antioxidants. It’s a great way to boost vegetable intake, especially for picky eaters.
- Potatoes: Rich in complex carbohydrates, potassium, and vitamin C, potatoes provide energy and a creamy base for these tots.
- Cheese: Adds a satisfying savory flavor while contributing protein, calcium, and fat. These nutrients support bone health and keep the tots deliciously cheesy.
Why Spinach Potato Tots Are Perfect for BLW:
- Nutritional Value: They are packed with essential nutrients like iron, vitamin C, and carbohydrates to support your baby’s growth and energy needs.
- Soft Texture: These tots are tender inside, making them easy to gum and chew, even for babies without teeth.
- Hand-Friendly: Their small, cylindrical shape is ideal for baby-led weaning, helping babies practice self-feeding and improve their fine motor skills.
- Customizable: These tots are gluten-free and egg-free. You can add other vegetables like carrots or peas or incorporate herbs like parsley for added flavor.
- Freezer-Friendly: Make a large batch and freeze extras for quick, healthy meals during busy days.
How to Serve:
You can serve these on their own as a midday snack option for babies or toddlers. I myself like to eat a few!
To make a more balanced meal, serve with a side of avocado (or guacamole) and some fruit of choice.
What you need:
Steamer– I like to use my baby steamer
Ingredients & Substitutions:
Potato- The potato is the base of the tot. I recommend using a large russet or Idaho potato. If you have small potatoes use two instead of one.
Spinach- You can replace with kale. I haven’t tried using frozen spinach, but I believe it will work, just make sure to steam it with potato.
Cheese- I used shredded mozzarella in this recipe, since it is naturally lower in sodium. You can use any cheese you prefer. For a dairy-free option try adding 1-2 tbsp of flour, but there won’t be much flavor, I would recommend adding some seasonings, like nutritional yeast to replicate a cheesy flavor. For a dairy-free tot, try my Broccoli Potato Carrot Tot.
