Unlike purées or spoon-feeding, BLW allows babies to explore food through touch, taste, and self-feeding at their own pace. Chicken drumsticks are a particularly good option for BLW because they are easy to grasp, soft enough for babies to gum, and packed with essential nutrients that are beneficial for growth and development. Chicken drumsticks are an excellent food when starting solids, it could be a great teether, while helping baby’s oral motor skills.
Nutritional Benefits of Chicken Drumsticks:
Chicken is an excellent source of high quality protein, which is essential for babies as it helps in building muscles, tissues, and overall body growth. In particular, chicken drumsticks contain a good amount of iron and zinc, which are vital nutrients for brain development and a healthy immune system. Iron is crucial for making hemoglobin, which carries oxygen through the body, and introducing iron-rich foods at around 6 months is important as breast milk alone may not provide enough at that stage. Additionally, the dark meat of chicken drumsticks contains Vitamin B6 and niacin, both of which help support energy metabolism and a healthy nervous system.
The healthy fats found in drumsticks provide a good source of energy for your baby’s growing body and developing brain. These nutrients make chicken drumsticks a great option for a well-rounded meal, especially when paired with other healthy foods like vegetables or whole grains. Chicken drumsticks are a versatile option as well. You can serve them alongside steamed vegetables, mashed sweet potatoes, or soft whole grains like quinoa or rice to create a balanced, nutritious meal. They are also great for meal prep, you can roast several drumsticks at once and store them for later meals.
How to Serve:
I was always a little nervous to serve to Zion in his early months, but if your baby is a great chewer and you properly take the skin off and small bone within the flesh you can serve this to 6+ months baby.
For 9+ months- you can serve as a whole drumstick, when properly removing skin and thin bone within the flesh, or you can shred into smaller pieces.
