How to Make White Rice

How to Make Perfect White Rice on the Stove – Simple, Fluffy & Foolproof

Growing up, white rice was always on the table, warm, comforting and the base for so many of our favorite meals. Whether it was paired with a stew, chicken, stir-fry, or just a fried egg with a drizzle of soy sauce, it was the food that felt like home. I figured out this simple stovetop method, it became one of my favorite no-fail recipes to pass along. Now, it’s part of my weekly meal prep and my kid’s favorites’ too. It’s soft, mild, and easy to digest, great for little eaters and it goes with nearly everything, making it a go-to for quick family dinners. Whether you’re cooking for one or feeding a family, this easy method works every time. No rice cooker needed!

Tips for Success on How to Make White Rice:

Double or triple the recipe: Just keep the ratio the same and use a larger pot.

Use the right ratio: 1 part rice to 1 1/2 cups water is ideal for most white rice.

Don’t skip rinsing: You must wash your rice.

Keep the lid on: No peeking! Every time you lift the lid, you release steam.

Use a non-stick pan: A non-stick pan is a must when cooking rice, if not it can get stuck to the bottom.

What to Eat with White Rice

White rice is incredibly versatile. You can enjoy it as a side dish, a base, or even the star of the show. Here are a few easy serving ideas:

.With stir-fried vegetables and tofu or chicken

.As a side for curry, chili, or stews

.With eggs and avocado for a quick breakfast bowl

.Topped with roasted vegetables

.In fried rice (great for using leftovers!)

.Burrito Bowls

For little ones, rice can be served plain or mixed with soft-cooked veggies, mashed beans, shredded chicken or ground beef. It’s a great first food because it’s mild and easy to eat.

Storing & Reheating

Rice is perfect for meal prepping. Here’s how to store and reheat it safely:

.Let the rice cool completely before transferring it to a container.

.Store in the fridge for up to 4 days.

.To reheat: Add a splash of water and microwave in a covered bowl to re-steam it. Or warm gently on the stove with a little water and a lid.

⚠️ Never leave cooked rice out at room temperature too long. To prevent food safety issues, refrigerate within an hour or two of cooking.

Types of White Rice You Can Use:

We love to use long-grain white rice in my house, but there are other rice you can use.

If you are using Basmati Rice or Jasmine Rice these will need about 1/4 cup water more and about 5 more minutes cook time, since they absorb the water differently.

What You Need:

Medium non-stick Saucepan

Measuring cup

Let the rice cook undisturbed. Don’t lift the lid, don’t stir it, just let it be. After about 20 minutes, check it. If the water is fully absorbed and the rice is tender, it’s done. If not, give it a few more minutes.
This is depending on what kind of white rice you are using. If it's long-grain white rice it should be done after 20. For basmati or jasmine, it might need a few more minutes.

6.

When the rice is cooked, turn off the heat but leave the lid on. Let the pot sit, covered, for 5 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice and helps firm up the texture.

7.

Use a fork to gently fluff the rice. This separates the grains and releases any trapped steam. Now you’re ready to serve!
