Baby Salmon Rice Bowl

Baby’s First Salmon Rice Bowl – A Gentle & Nutritious Introduction to Fish for 7 months & up 🐟🍚🥦

Introducing fish to your baby can feel like a big milestone—but it doesn’t have to be complicated. This baby salmon rice bowl is a simple, soft, and nutrient-dense way to offer salmon for the first time. Made with just a few wholesome ingredients—baked salmon with a little butter and lemon, two soft broccoli florets, and fluffy white rice—this bowl is gentle on tiny tummies and easy to prepare.

Whether you’re following baby-led weaning (BLW) or a more traditional puree approach, this dish can be mashed, blended, or shaped into small, easy-to-hold balls for self-feeding. It’s a wonderful first fish recipe that introduces flavor and texture in a baby-friendly way while providing essential nutrients for early development.

Why Salmon for Babies?

Salmon is one of the best first proteins you can offer your baby starting around 6 to 8 months of age. It’s soft, flaky, and packed with nutrients that support brain growth and immune health. Here’s why salmon is a smart choice:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) – Critical for brain and eye development

  • High-quality protein – Supports muscle and cell growth

  • Vitamin D – Supports bone development and immune function

  • Iron and zinc – Important for cognitive development and a healthy immune system

Plus, salmon has a naturally mild flavor, making it more palatable for babies compared to other fish.

Nutritional Benefits in One Simple Bowl:

This dish is packed with nutrients:

  • Salmon provides omega-3s, iron, and vitamin D.

  • Broccoli adds fiber, vitamin C, and folate.

  • White rice is gentle on the stomach and provides carbohydrates for energy.

It’s a well-balanced introduction to whole foods and a great way to expand your baby’s palate in a safe, nourishing way.

Tips for Success:

  • Always ensure fish is cooked thoroughly and bones are fully removed.

  • Start with small portions and observe for any signs of allergies (especially if it’s the first time trying fish).

  • You can freeze mashed portions in small silicone trays for quick future meals.

Serving Suggestions for Different Ages & Stages:

This salmon rice bowl is incredibly versatile and can be adapted based on your baby’s age, feeding style, and texture readiness:

👶 For babies 6–9 months:

  • Pureed: Blend salmon, rice, and broccoli with a little water, breastmilk, or formula until smooth and spoon-feed.

  • Mashed: Mash everything together with a fork into a soft, cohesive texture for spoon-feeding or pre-loaded spoons for early self-feeding.

  • Rice balls: Form small, soft rice balls that are easy for baby to grasp with their hands (especially great for baby-led weaning BLW).

👧 For babies 9–12 months:

  • Offer small chunks of soft, flaky salmon, broken-up broccoli, and sticky rice they can pick up independently.

  • Add a little mashed avocado on the side or a dollop or baby-friendly avocado crema for dipping.

  • Serve as a deconstructed bowl to encourage exploration and finger feeding.

🧒 For toddlers (12+ months):

  • Serve as a full bowl with a toddler fork and optional toppings like a sprinkle of shredded cheese or chopped herbs.

  • Add flavor boosters like a tiny drizzle of olive oil or seasoning.

What You Need:

Steamer– I use a baby steamer, you can steam and blend all in one.
