Blueberry Crumble Bars: A Healthy Dessert for Kids and Adults
If you are looking for healthy, toddler dessert ideas, that you can enjoy with your little one, you have to give these Blueberry Crumble Bars a try! They are irresistibly delicious and I’m not just saying that because it’s my recipe, they truly are delightful. These bars are the perfect treat, packed with wholesome ingredients and bursting with natural sweetness from the wild blueberries. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, afternoon snack, a lunchbox treat, or a healthier dessert option, these bars strike the perfect balance between delicious and nutritious.
Allergen-friendly dessert:
The best part about this kid-friendly dessert, they are made with nutritious ingredients like oats and almond flour, has no refined sugar, sweetened with date syrup and wild blueberries. This tasty treat is vegan, dairy-free, egg-free and gluten-free. To make it nut-free try substituting the almond flour with oat flour.
Why Parents and Kids Love Them:
- For Parents: These bars are made with simple, whole ingredients, allowing adults to indulge guilt-free. They’re easy to prepare and can be stored for several days, making them a convenient breakfast, snack option or something to enjoy midday with your coffee.
- For Kids: The sweet, fruity filling and crumbly topping make these bars irresistible to little ones. Plus, their handheld size is perfect for small fingers. Can be served to kids 12 months & up.
Tips for Success:
- When making the crumble be sure to use a fork to mix, so you can get nice crumble texture.
- Be sure to make a little extra crumble to add on top.
- Don’t add the 2 tablespoons of water right away, sometimes I need it if my crumble is too dry and other times my crumble is perfect without it.
- For the blueberry jam, I prefer using frozen wild blueberries. They are sweeter in flavor and you can’t feel any skin. I heated up 2/3 cup of frozen wild blueberries in the microwave for 60 seconds. Once removed I added 1 tsp chia seeds, let it sit for 5 minutes and add a little date syrup or sweetener of choice.
Substitutions:
Instant Oats- I prefer using instant oats, since they are thinner in texture, but rolled oats will work as well.
Almond flour- I haven’t tried swapping the almond flour, but if you need to make it nut-free you can try substituting with oat flour.
Coconut Oil- Can be substituted with another neutral oil, like avocado oil or melted butter.
Date Syrup- You can replace with maple syrup or honey (only for 12 months & up).
Wild Blueberries for jam- Any homemade or store bought jam of preference will work in this recipe. I have made it with homemade wild blueberry jam and store-bought strawberry jam, both came out amazing!
