Chicken & Cheese Roll Ups

Easy Toddler Lunch Idea: Chicken & Cheese Roll-Ups- A warm, melty lunch the whole family will love, especially picky toddlers!

This is truly one of those lunches that makes everyone in my house happy. My toddler devours it, my older kid loves it, and even I look forward to eating one with some guacamole on the side. It’s warm, comforting, and just the right mix of crispy and melty. On busy days when I don’t have time to think, this is my go-to. I almost always have leftover chicken breast and tortillas on hand, so it’s one of those meals I can pull together in 5-7 minutes and I know it’ll be a hit every single time.

Made with just a few simple ingredients—tortilla, shredded chicken breast, and cheese (or non-dairy cheese). They’re quick to assemble, lightly crisped on the stove, and packed with protein and flavor.

Warm, melty, and perfectly hand-held, these roll-ups are ideal for picky toddlers, preschoolers, older kids, and even adults. You can keep it classic or add fun dips and sides to build a balanced, satisfying lunch plate.

Why Chicken & Cheese Roll-Ups Are Great for Toddlers:

  • Quick and easy – Just 5-7 minutes in the pan and lunch is ready.

  • Customizable – Use what you have: tortillas, cheese, protein.

  • Picky-eater approved – Familiar flavors with a satisfying texture.

  • Nutritious & Delicious – Offers protein, fats, and carbs for balanced energy.

  • Great for lunchboxes – These roll ups are excellent served cold. Add it to your kid’s school lunchbox with some fruit and veggies on the side.

Ways to Eat & Serve:

Make these roll-ups part of a fun and balanced toddler lunch! Here are a few pairing ideas:

  • Dip in guacamole, hummus, or my Homemade Ranch. Toddlers love to dip!

  • Serve with fruit on the side – like sliced strawberries, apples, grapes (halved), or banana.

  • Add a few cucumber sticks, bell peppers, whichever veggies your little one likes.

  • Turn it into a wrap for older kids or adults – add greens, avocado, or salsa before rolling.

These also make a great on-the-go lunchbox option—just cool and pack in a container with their favorite sides.

Pro Tip:

To keep the roll-up sealed, sprinkle a bit of cheese right along the fold of the tortilla before rolling. As it cooks, it melts and acts like glue, holding the roll tightly closed, no toothpicks or mess needed!

What You Need:

Small Pan

Substitutions:

  • Tortilla:
    – Use whole wheat for added fiber, gluten-free for allergies, or cassava or almond flour wraps for grain-free versions.
    – You can also try mini tortillas for baby-sized portions.

  • Chicken breast:
    – Swap with rotisserie chicken, leftover roast chicken, or even turkey.

  • Cheese:
    – Any shredded cheese works, cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or even a blend.
    – We don’t mix meat and dairy in our home so I used dairy-free cheese. The brand we love most is Violife Mozzarella Cheese.

Notes

Storage instructions- Refrigerator: Store any leftover roll-ups in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat on a skillet or in the toaster oven for a few minutes to bring back the crispiness. Freezer: You can freeze cooked roll-ups (before slicing) by wrapping them tightly in foil or parchment, then placing them in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge overnight and warm in a pan or oven until heated through.
