Easy One Pot Pasta for Kids

Easy One Pot Pasta for Kids (No Drain)🍝

If you’re looking for a simple, family-friendly dinner, this easy one pot pasta for kids is about to become a regular in your weekly meal rotation. It’s creamy, comforting, incredibly flavorful, and best of all it’s a no drain pasta recipe made completely in one pot. That means less cleanup, less mess, and a dinner that comes together quickly on busy weeknights.

What makes this recipe extra special is that the pasta cooks directly in the marinara sauce and broth, which allows it to absorb all the flavor while creating a naturally creamy sauce. Instead of boiling pasta separately and draining it, everything cooks together in one pot, making this a true no drain pasta recipe that’s perfect for parents who want something easy but still homemade.

Another great bonus is the added nutrition. This recipe includes 2 1/2 cups of chicken broth, which adds extra flavor, nutrients, and depth to the sauce while helping cook the pasta perfectly. The result is a creamy, saucy pasta that tastes like it simmered, but actually comes together in about 20 minutes.

Kids love this pasta because it’s simple, mild, and comforting. The sauce clings to every piece of pasta, making it extra creamy and satisfying. Parents love it because it’s made with simple pantry ingredients, minimal prep, and just one pot to wash afterward.

Why This One Pot Pasta is Perfect for Kids 👩‍🍳

This recipe checks all the boxes for a kid-friendly dinner:

  • No drain pasta means less work and fewer dishes

  • One pot dinner perfect for busy weeknights

  • Budget-Friendly

  • Ready in less than 20 minutes

Because the pasta cooks directly in the sauce and broth, the starch released from the pasta naturally thickens the sauce, giving it that creamy, cozy texture.

How It Works (The No Drain Method)

Instead of boiling pasta in water and draining it, this recipe uses a no drain pasta cooking method. The pasta simmers directly in marinara sauce and chicken broth. As it cooks, the pasta absorbs the liquid while releasing starches that naturally thicken the sauce.

This technique results in:

  • A creamier sauce

  • More flavorful pasta

  • Less mess in the kitchen

And of course only one pot to clean.

How to Serve 🍽️

This easy one pot pasta for kids is delicious on its own, but you can easily turn it into a complete, balanced meal by pairing it with a few simple sides.

Some great serving ideas include:

  • Roasted vegetables like broccoli, zucchini, carrots, or cauliflower

  • Steamed vegetables for a quick and easy option

  • A fresh side salad

  • Grated parmesan cheese sprinkled on top

You can also add a favorite protein to make the meal more filling for the whole family. Some great options include:

  • Grilled or baked chicken

  • Fish such as salmon

  • Steak

  • Shrimp

For toddlers, you can keep it simple and serve the pasta with soft vegetables or shredded chicken on the side. For adults, you can build your own bowl with extra toppings, protein, and veggies.

Tips for Success ⭐

  • Stir frequently so the pasta doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot.

  • Keep the pot at a medium simmer, not a rapid boil.

  • If the sauce gets too thick before the pasta is cooked, simply add water or more broth (about 1/4 cup).

  • Finish with grated parmesan for extra creaminess.

Substitutions 🔄

This easy one pot pasta for kids is very flexible, and you can easily adjust the ingredients based on what you have at home or your family’s preferences.

  • Chicken broth: You can substitute with vegetable broth or even water if that’s what you have available. Broth adds extra flavor and nutrients, but water will still work.

  • Marinara sauce: Any jarred pasta sauce works here, such as tomato basil sauce or a simple tomato sauce. You can also use homemade marinara if you have it on hand.

  • Pasta: Use any pasta shape you like. Penne, rotini, fusilli, shells, or elbow pasta all work great. For a more nutritious option, you can use whole wheat pasta or chickpea protein pasta.

  • Add vegetables: This recipe is also a great place to add extra nutrition. You can mix in broccoli, zucchini, spinach, or peas while the pasta cooks.

If pasta is still not ready after 15 minutes, cover for the last 4-5 minutes to ensure it is cooked through. If liquid is too thick add another splash of broth or water

Notes

Storage instructions- Refrigerator: Store leftover one pot pasta in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days.
Reheating: When reheating, add a splash of water, broth, or milk to loosen the sauce since pasta naturally absorbs liquid as it sits. Warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring halfway through.
Freezer: You can also freeze this pasta in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
