Easy Vanilla Cake – Naturally Sweetened With Honey & Perfect for Kids Birthdays 12 months & Up!

If you’re looking for a simple, no-fuss vanilla cake that feels special but uses clean, nourishing ingredients—this recipe is for you. This easy vanilla cake made from scratch, with no refined sugar, sweetened gently with honey, and comes together in just one bowl. No whipping, no complicated steps—just mix, bake, and enjoy. It’s moist, soft, and fluffy every time.

This cake is ideal for first or second birthday celebrations, but it’s versatile enough to serve at any gathering or weekend treat. With its warm vanilla flavor and tender crumb, it’s a cake the whole family, from babies to grownups can enjoy together.

A Homemade Vanilla Cake Made with Real Ingredients:

Unlike store-bought mixes this cake is made with wholesome ingredients that are better for growing bodies and gentle on little tummies. it’s made with nourishing ingredients that offer real value to growing little ones (and adults too!) Here’s what makes it special:

  • All-purpose flour – While it’s a standard baking staple, it provides carbohydrates for energy and a soft texture that makes the cake easy to chew for young eaters.

  • Butter – A source of healthy saturated fats and fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A, which supports eye and immune health.

  • Whole milk yogurt – Adds moisture, a subtle tang, and beneficial probiotics for gut health. It’s also a great source of calcium and protein.

  • Milk – Offers calcium, vitamin D (if fortified), and B vitamins that help support bone growth and energy production.

  • Honey (for babies 12 months and up) – A natural sweetener with antioxidants and trace minerals, and easier on blood sugar levels than refined sugar.

  • Eggs – Full of protein, iron, healthy fats, and choline, which is essential for brain development in young children.

Tips for Success:

Make this easy homemade vanilla cake baking process even easier with these tried-and-true tips:

  • Make the base the night before: Bake the cake the night before your celebration and let it cool completely. Leave it covered on the counter overnight (no need to refrigerate).

  • Frost and decorate the next day: The next day, add your frosting, berries, sprinkles, or other favorite toppings just before serving for the freshest results and best texture.

  • Sift Flour & Don’t overmix: Make sure to sift the flour, this makes a huge difference in the cake. When stirring, stir until ingredients are just combined to keep the cake light and tender.

  • Let it cool completely before frosting: A warm cake will melt your frosting and make things slippery!

Ideal for Birthdays & Special Moments:

This vanilla cake is especially perfect for a 1st or 2nd birthday celebration. Its soft texture makes it easy for little hands to grab and enjoy, and it pairs beautifully with whipped cream, yogurt-based frosting, or fresh fruit.

You can:

  • Bake it in a round or square pan for a traditional cake (this is what I did for my toddler). Double the recipe if you are having more guests and make a 2 tier cake!

  • Bake it in smaller pans like 6 in. and stack for a 2 tier smash cake

  • Fold in some sprinkles for a sprinkle vanilla cake!

Frosting & Finishing Touches:

For this cake, I used a light honey whipped cream frosting topped with my toddler’s favorite berries. It was simple, fresh, and complemented the vanilla flavor beautifully.

But this cake works well with just about any frosting you like:

  • Yogurt-based frosting (plain Greek yogurt + maple syrup or mashed berries)

  • Cream cheese frosting for a rich and tangy option

  • Buttermilk or whipped ricotta frostings for a smooth, lightly tangy finish

  • Top with favorite fruit or sprinkles!
