Cherry Chia Jam

🍒 Cherry Chia Jam for Babies & Kids

If there is one little kitchen hack I wish every parent knew, it’s this: keep a bag of frozen cherries in your freezer! They make homemade cherry jam SO easy because they’re already pitted, which means there is almost no prep work involved.

This Cherry Chia Jam has become one of my favorite things to make when I want something sweet and delicious for the kids without reaching for a store-bought jam loaded with refined sugar. You literally throw frozen cherries, a little water, chia seeds, and your sweetener of choice into a small pot, let everything cook for about 10 minutes, and then give it a quick blend.

That’s it! 🍒

You end up with the most beautiful, rich, naturally sweet cherry jam that is perfect for toast, oatmeal, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, sandwiches, or even eating straight off the spoon. And because it is made with just a few simple ingredients, you know exactly what is going into it.

I started making this for my kids when they were little because it’s such an easy way to add fruit, fiber, and healthy fats from chia seeds to foods they already love.

🍒 Why You’ll Love This Cherry Chia Jam

  • Only a few simple ingredients
  • No refined sugar
  • Made with frozen cherries, so there’s almost no prep
  • Ready in about 10 minutes
  • Naturally thickened with chia seeds
  • Easy to customize for different ages
  • Great for babies, toddlers, and the whole family
  • Perfect for meal prep
  • Can be used in so many different ways

And honestly, the frozen cherry shortcut is the best part. There is no washing, pitting, or chopping a giant pile of fresh cherries. Just open the bag and pour them into the pot!

Sweetener for babies

When Zion was younger, I always used date syrup when I wanted to add a little sweetness to recipes like this.

For babies under 12 months, I would skip honey. Honey should not be given before 12 months.

You can make this jam with just the cherries if you prefer, especially once you taste how naturally sweet cherries become when cooked. Or use a small amount of date syrup for babies.

For 12 months and up, you can use maple syrup or honey if you’d like.

🍒 Nutritional Benefits

Cherries

Cherries provide naturally occurring carbohydrates for energy along with fiber and a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds. They also give this jam its beautiful color and naturally sweet-tart flavor.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are such an easy ingredient to add to baby and kid recipes. They provide fiber, healthy fats, and plant-based protein, and they help naturally thicken the jam without needing pectin or lots of sugar.

🥄 How to Serve Cherry Chia Jam by Age

8–12 Months

  • Spread a thin layer on soft toast
  • Mix into oatmeal or baby cereal
  • Stir into full-fat plain yogurt
  • Add to pancakes or waffles cut into baby-friendly pieces
  • Mix into cottage cheese
  • Spoon a small amount onto preloaded spoons

For younger babies, blend the jam very smooth and make sure the texture is appropriate for your baby’s eating skills.

12–18 Months

Toddlers can enjoy it spread on toast, stirred into yogurt or oatmeal, or served alongside pancakes and waffles. You can start offering a slightly thicker texture as their eating skills develop.

18 Months+

Use it just like regular jam! Spread it on toast, make a PB&J, swirl it into yogurt, add it to overnight oats, or use it as a topping for pancakes and waffles.

🍞 So Many Ways to Use It

Cherry Chia Jam is one of those recipes I love having in the fridge because it can turn a basic snack into something that feels a little more special.

Try it:

  • On toast with peanut or almond butter
  • Swirled into oatmeal
  • Mixed into Greek or full-fat yogurt
  • On pancakes or waffles
  • Spread into a sandwich
  • With cottage cheese
  • On top of chia pudding
  • Swirled into overnight oats
  • Alongside crackers and cheese
  • As a naturally sweet topping for French toast

My Biggest Tip

Don’t skip the hand blender!

Once the cherries have softened and the chia seeds have had time to thicken everything, give the mixture a quick blend. It transforms the cooked cherries into this gorgeous, rich, spoonable jam.

You can blend it completely smooth for babies or leave a little texture for older toddlers and kids.

Easy Substitutions

Cherries: Frozen cherries are my favorite for this recipe, but you can absolutely use fresh pitted cherries when they’re in season.

Chia seeds: I recommend chia seeds because they help thicken the jam, but if you don’t have them, the consistency will simply be thinner.

Sweetener: For babies, use date syrup or skip the sweetener altogether. For 12 months and up, maple syrup or honey can be used.

Add frozen cherries, water, chia seeds, and sweetener of choice to a small saucepan cover and cook on medium-low heat for 10 min, stir occasionally, until the cherries are soft and have released their juices
I like to use frozen cherries since they are easy and don't have the seed, but you can use fresh cherries as well
