Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup for Kids

Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup for Kids

There’s something about a warm bowl of chicken noodle soup that just feels like home. Every year, I make some sort of chicken soup recipe because my kids and I LOVE chicken soup and honestly, this page started with chicken soup! So naturally, I had to make a creamy version, and let me tell you… this one is GOOD, plus it’s great for 9-10 months & up.

This creamy chicken noodle soup is cozy, warm, comforting, and the kind of meal that feels like it feeds your soul. It’s creamy without needing dairy, packed with tender chicken and vegetables, and has noodles that make it extra kid-friendly. My kids absolutely loved it, and I honestly could not stop eating it. It’s so good my mouth is watering just talking about it!

The best part is that it’s also surprisingly easy to make. You only need one pot, a handful of simple ingredients, and about 30 minutes to get a big cozy pot of soup on the table. It’s also one of those recipes I love having in my back pocket during cold and flu season. When kids aren’t feeling well and their appetite is low, a warm bowl of soup can be an easy, comforting option. The broth provides fluids, while the chicken, noodles, and vegetables add some nourishment when you don’t feel like eating a big meal.

🥣 Why You’ll Love This Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup for Kids

  • Kid-friendly and family-friendly – A meal everyone can enjoy together.
  • Cozy and comforting – Perfect for cold weather or a sick day.
  • Great when appetite is low – Warm, flavorful broth can be easier to tolerate when kids don’t feel like eating much.
  • Easy to make – Simple ingredients and straightforward steps.
  • Dairy-free – Coconut milk makes it creamy without dairy.
  • Packed with protein and vegetables – Chicken, carrots, celery, and broth make this more nourishing than a bowl of noodles alone.
  • One-pot meal – Less cleanup is always a win!
  • Great for leftovers – Make a big pot and enjoy it throughout the week.

🍗 Ingredients You’ll Need

Chicken breast:
I use chicken breast because it cooks quickly and is easy to shred into bite-sized pieces for kids.

Carrots: 🥕
Carrots add a little natural sweetness and soft texture to the soup.

Celery:
Celery adds flavor and another vegetable to the bowl.

Onion & garlic: 🧅🧄
These create the savory base and add so much flavor to the broth.

Flour:
A little flour helps thicken the soup and gives it that creamy, hearty consistency.

Chicken broth:
Use your favorite chicken broth or stock as the base.

Coconut milk: 🥥
I use coconut milk to keep this soup dairy-free while still making it rich and creamy. If dairy isn’t an issue for your family, you can absolutely use cream instead.

Noodles: 🍜
Use your favorite noodles! I like smaller egg noodles that are easy for little hands and mouths to manage.

🥕 Nutritional Benefits

This isn’t just comfort food, it’s packed with several nutritious ingredients into one bowl.

Protein & Amino Acids

Chicken is an excellent source of protein and provides essential amino acids that the body needs for growth, tissue repair, and many other important functions.

The chicken and broth also contribute to the overall protein and amino acid content of the soup, making it a comforting way to add nourishment to a meal.

💧 Fluids & Hydration

The broth-based soup also provides fluid, which can be especially helpful when kids aren’t drinking or eating as much as usual.

When your little one is sick, sometimes a warm, flavorful broth is much more appealing than a full plate of food.

🥕 Vegetables

Carrots, celery, onion, and garlic add vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber while bringing lots of flavor to the soup.

🥥 Healthy Fats

Coconut milk adds fat and richness, making the soup more satisfying and creamy.

🤒 Perfect for Cold Weather & Sick Days

This is such a good recipe to have during cold weather, especially when your kids aren’t feeling well.

When they’re sick, I find that their appetite can completely disappear. I’m not trying to force a big meal, I just want to offer something warm, comforting, and nourishing that they might actually want to eat.

The soft noodles, tender chicken, vegetables, and creamy broth make this soup an easy option to offer. Even if they only want a little broth and a few noodles, that’s okay. Sometimes a few bites are better than nothing when they’re not feeling well. ❤️

👶 How to Serve by Age

Baby

For babies who are developmentally ready for these ingredients and textures, you can make the soup more baby-friendly by making sure everything is very soft and appropriately sized.

You can also puree the soup for a smoother texture. Simply blend the chicken, vegetables, noodles, and broth together to your desired consistency.

For babies under 12 months, omit added salt and season the adult portions separately.

Toddler

Shred the chicken finely and make sure the vegetables and noodles are soft. You can cut longer noodles into smaller pieces if needed.

Serve a small portion alongside other foods your toddler enjoys, or let them scoop and eat the soup themselves.

Older Kids

Older kids can enjoy the soup exactly as you would serve it to adults. Add extra noodles, chicken, or vegetables depending on what they like.

And of course, everyone can add their favorite toppings or a little extra cream if desired.

💡 Tips for the Best Soup

  • Don’t skip searing the chicken—it adds so much flavor.
  • Shred the chicken while it’s still warm for easier shredding.
  • Add the noodles toward the end so they don’t become overly soft.
  • Add more broth if you prefer a thinner soup, more flour for thicker soup.
  • Taste before serving and adjust the seasoning to your family’s preference.
  • If you’re making this for a baby, season their portion separately.

🧊 Storage Instructions

Store leftover soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.

The noodles will absorb some of the broth as they sit, so add a splash of chicken broth or water when reheating if needed.

Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until heated through.

🥥 Easy Substitutions

  • Chicken breast: Use boneless, skinless chicken thighs instead.
  • Coconut milk: Substitute heavy cream or half-and-half if dairy is okay.
  • Noodles: Use egg noodles, small pasta shapes, or your favorite noodles.
  • Carrots: Swap or add peas, zucchini, or another favorite vegetable.
  • Chicken broth: Homemade or store bought chicken broth works beautifully.
  • Flour: Use all-purpose flour or a gluten-free flour blend if needed.
