🍫 Toddler Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake
This toddler chocolate peanut butter protein shake is one of those recipes that gets requested in our house multiple times a week. My kids absolutely love it, and honestly I don’t mind making it at all because I know it tastes like a treat to them while being packed with so many nutritious ingredients. You can serve it anytime of day for breakfast, snack time, after school or after a busy day of playing.
To them, it tastes just like a chocolate peanut butter milkshake. It’s creamy, chocolatey, naturally sweet and incredibly delicious. But what I love most is that it’s made with real, wholesome ingredients and provides a great boost of nutrients and protein for growing toddlers. It’s one of those recipes that makes you feel good as a parent because your kids think they’re getting a sweet treat, while you know they’re getting protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals all in one delicious drink.
The best part? There’s no protein powder involved. Everything comes from simple foods you probably already have at home.

💪 A Natural Protein Boost for Toddlers
Protein is an important nutrient for growing children. It supports muscle growth, energy levels, and overall development.
Toddlers between the ages of 1–3 years old need about 13 grams of protein per day. While that might sound like a lot, it usually adds up throughout the day from foods like milk, yogurt, eggs, meat, beans, and nut butters.
This smoothie helps contribute a nice portion of that daily protein, thanks to ingredients like:
Peanut butter, which provides plant-based protein and healthy fats
Milk, which contains protein and calcium for strong bones
Spinach, which adds protein along with other vitamins and minerals
Together, these ingredients make the shake filling and satisfying, helping keep little ones energized between meals.
🌿 Hidden Nutrition Kids Won’t Notice
One of my favorite parts of this shake is the handful of spinach blended inside.
You truly cannot taste it at all (making it great for picky eaters), but it adds valuable nutrients like:
Iron
Vitamin A
Vitamin C
Fiber
It’s a simple way to get greens in your kids diet.
🍌 How to Serve
This shake is best served fresh and cold right after blending.
You can serve it:
In a regular cup with a straw
In a toddler straw cup
Alongside breakfast
As an afternoon snack
For an extra thick shake, try using a frozen banana.
🔄 Substitutions & Swaps
This smoothie is very flexible, and you can easily adjust it depending on what you have at home or your child’s preferences.
Banana
Banana works best in this shake
You can sub with steamed and cooled sweet potato
Peanut Butter
Swap with almond butter or cashew butter
Use sunflower seed butter for a nut-free option (great for daycare-safe smoothies)
Cocoa Powder
I don’t recommend substituting the cocoa powder in this recipe, but you can reduce the amount `if your toddler prefers a milder chocolate flavor
Date
Swap with 1–2 teaspoons maple syrup
Use honey for children 12 months and older
You can omit it if the banana is very ripe and sweet
Spinach
Kale can work as a substitute, though the flavor may be slightly stronger
You can omit it if needed, but it’s a great way to add hidden nutrients
Milk
Any milk works well, including whole milk, almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk
