🥦 Cheesy Veggie Bites for Babies & Toddlers
If you’re looking for an easy way to get more vegetables onto your baby or toddler’s plate, these cheesy veggie bites are such a good one! They’re soft, tender, easy to chew, and packed with vegetables, making them perfect for little ones who are learning to self-feed.
I made these for my little one and honestly… I was eating them like there was no tomorrow. They are SO good! The combination of potato, broccoli, carrot, and melted cheese makes them flavorful enough that they don’t feel like “baby food” at all.
These are perfect for baby-led weaning (BLW), tiny hands learning to self-feed, or babies transitioning from softer foods to slightly firmer textures. They hold their shape beautifully once baked, but stay soft and tender inside, so they’re easy for little mouths to manage.
And my favorite part? You don’t even have to get your hands messy! Everything gets mixed together and then scooped straight into a mini silicone muffin tin. No shaping individual bites, no frying, and very little cleanup.

🥕 Simple Ingredients
You only need a handful of ingredients:
- Broccoli
- Carrot
- Potato

- Egg
- Shredded cheese
- Extra shredded cheese for topping
I love that the vegetables are cooked until tender first. This makes the mixture soft enough to easily combine and also gives the finished bites that soft, tender texture that works so well for babies.
👶 Great for Baby-Led Weaning
These are a great option for babies who are practicing picking up food, bringing it to their mouths, and learning to self-feed.
At around 9 months and up, many babies are working on their pincer grasp and becoming more confident with finger foods. These bites are easy to pick up and hold, making them a fun way to practice those skills.
They’re also a great option if your baby is transitioning from very soft foods to firmer solids. They have more structure than a puree or mashed vegetables, but they’re still soft and tender enough to easily break apart.
As always, make sure your baby is developmentally ready for finger foods, serve an appropriate size and texture for their stage, and supervise them closely while eating.
How to Serve by Age
👶 9–12 months:
Cut or break the bites into an appropriate size and texture for your baby’s eating skills. Since they are soft and tender, they can be easy for babies to grasp and gum.
For babies under 12 months, I recommend using low-sodium breadcrumbs and cheese when possible and skipping any added salt.
👶 12+ months:
Serve the bites whole if your toddler can comfortably manage the size, or cut them into smaller pieces. They make an easy addition to a toddler lunch or snack plate.
🧒 Toddlers & older kids:
Serve alongside fruit, yogurt, avocado, eggs, chicken, or another protein for a more complete meal. You can also pack them into a lunchbox!
Why Bake Them in a Mini Silicone Muffin Tin?
This is honestly the trick that makes these bites so easy.
Instead of scooping the mixture out and forming individual patties with your hands, simply scoop the mixture directly into a mini silicone muffin tin.
There’s no need to spray the silicone tin with oil. Once baked and cooled slightly, the bites pop right out and hold their shape beautifully.
I also like adding a little extra shredded cheese on top before baking. It melts into the tops and gives them that delicious cheesy finish. 🧀
Bake for about 15 minutes, or until the bites are set and the cheese is melted.
Let them cool before removing them from the silicone mold.
Nutritional Benefits
These little bites may be simple, but they pack a lot of nutritious ingredients into one easy-to-eat food.
🥦 Broccoli: Provides fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate.
🥕 Carrots: A great source of beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, supporting healthy vision and immune function.
🥔 Potatoes: Provide carbohydrates for energy along with potassium and other nutrients.
🥚 Egg: Adds protein and helps bind everything together.
🧀 Cheese: Adds protein and calcium while giving these bites that cheesy flavor babies and toddlers tend to love.
Because the vegetables are mixed right into the bites, they’re also a helpful option for little ones who aren’t always interested in eating vegetables on their own.
Tips for Making the Best Cheesy Veggie Bites
Cook the vegetables until tender.
You want the broccoli, carrot, and potato soft enough to mash and mix easily.
Don’t overfill the muffin tin.
A mini muffin size works really well because the bites are easy for little hands to grab and manage.
Use silicone.
A silicone mini muffin pan makes removing the bites incredibly easy.
Let them cool before removing.
They firm up a little as they cool, which helps them pop out of the mold without falling apart.
Add cheese on top.
It’s optional, but I definitely recommend it. That little layer of melted cheese is so good!
🍽️ Easy Ways to Serve Them
These veggie bites work for so many meals!
Try serving them with:
- 🥑 Avocado
- 🍓 Fresh fruit
- 🥣 Full-fat yogurt
- 🍳 Scrambled eggs
- 🍗 Shredded chicken
- 🫘 Hummus
- 🍠 Sweet potato
- 🍎 Applesauce
They’re also perfect for adding to a divided toddler plate when you want a few different foods without making an entirely separate meal.
Storage & Freezing
These are a great recipe to make ahead for busy days.
Store cooled bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
You can also freeze them. Place the cooled bites in a freezer-safe container or bag, separating layers with parchment paper if needed, since they can easily stick together. Freeze for up to 2 months.
To serve, thaw in the refrigerator and gently reheat until warmed through. Always check the temperature before serving to your little one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can babies eat these cheesy veggie bites?
Yes! These are designed for babies around 9 months and up who are developmentally ready for finger foods. They are soft, tender, and easy to chew, making them a great option for babies practicing self-feeding.
Always consider your individual baby’s eating skills and serve the bites in an appropriate size and texture while supervising them closely.
Are these good for baby-led weaning?
Yes! These are especially nice for BLW because they’re easy for little hands to grab and hold. They also have enough structure to make self-feeding easier.
Can I make these without a mini silicone muffin tin?
Yes, although I really recommend the silicone muffin tin because it makes the process so easy and helps the bites hold their shape.
You can also spoon the mixture into small mounds on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake until set. The shape and texture may be slightly different and can spread out more.
Do I need to spray the silicone muffin tin?
No! Don’t spray it with oil. The bites should pop right out once they have cooled slightly. This is another reason I love using a silicone mini muffin pan for this recipe.
Why are my veggie bites falling apart?
Make sure your vegetables aren’t overly watery, you want to strain the veggies and use enough breadcrumbs to help bind the mixture. It’s also important to let the bites cool for a few minutes before removing them from the silicone mold, as they firm up as they cool.
Can I add other vegetables?
Absolutely! This is a great “clean out the fridge” recipe. You can experiment with cauliflower, peas, sweet potato or other soft-cooked vegetables.
Just be mindful of vegetables that contain a lot of water, such as zucchini, since too much moisture can make the bites difficult to hold together.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! These are perfect for meal prep. Make a batch at the beginning of the week and keep them in the refrigerator for quick breakfasts, lunches, or snacks.
Can I freeze them?
Yes! Once completely cooled, freeze them in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
Can toddlers eat these too?
Absolutely! These aren’t just for babies. Toddlers love them too, and they’re an easy way to get several vegetables into one tasty little bite.
My favorite part is that you can make one batch for the whole family instead of preparing a separate meal for your baby.
Can I use frozen broccoli or carrots?
Yes. Frozen vegetables work perfectly fine. Cook them until tender and make sure to drain off any excess water before mixing them into the recipe.
Can I add seasonings?
Definitely! For babies under 12 months, I would keep the seasonings simple and skip added salt. For older toddlers and kids, you can add a little garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, or other mild herbs and spices your family enjoys.
Easy Substitutions
One of the best things about these veggie bites is that they’re really flexible. You can easily adjust them based on what you have in the fridge or what your little one likes.
🥦 Broccoli:
You can swap the broccoli for cauliflower, peas, or another soft veggie. Just make sure whatever vegetable you use is cooked until soft before mixing.
🥕 Carrot:
Sweet potato is a great substitute for carrot and adds a little natural sweetness.
🥔 Potato:
Sweet potato works really well in place of regular potato. It gives the bites a slightly sweeter flavor that many babies and toddlers love.
🧀 Cheese:
Use whatever shredded cheese your family enjoys. Cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a mild Mexican cheese blend can all work. For babies under 12 months, choose a lower-sodium cheese when possible.
🥚 Egg:
The egg helps bind everything together, so I recommend keeping it in for the best texture. You can omit and add more breadcrumbs and cheese.
🍞 Breadcrumbs:
Regular breadcrumbs, whole-wheat breadcrumbs, or panko can work. For younger babies, I prefer plain, finely ground breadcrumbs without added salt or seasoning.
🌾 Gluten-free:
Use your favorite gluten-free breadcrumbs to easily make these gluten-free.
