Potato Egg Tater Tots – A Simple, Nutritious Snack for little ones 8 Months & Up
When it comes to easy baby-led weaning (BLW) recipes, you can’t go wrong with these Potato Egg Tater Tots. These tots are one of my favorite recipes for babies 8 months and up, especially if you’re just starting the transition from purées to firmer textures. They are incredibly simple to make, just boiled potato, boiled egg, shredded cheese, and a quick bake in the oven.
The texture is soft and easy for little hands to pick up, while still firm enough to hold together, making them ideal for BLW. Not only are they baby-friendly, but they’re also a snack that toddlers can enjoy with a side dip of ketchup. These little tots are versatile, nutritious, and perfect for any time of day, making them great for daycare lunchboxes as well.
Why Potato Egg Tater Tots Are Great for Babies:
Soft texture: Easy for babies who are just learning to chew.
Nutrient-dense: Eggs provide protein, potatoes add energy, and cheese gives healthy fats and calcium.
Finger food friendly: Helps babies practice self-feeding and improve motor skills.
Minimal ingredients: Made with just three wholesome foods, that you probably have in your house right now!
Nutritional Benefits:
Eggs are packed with high-quality protein, iron, and choline, nutrients essential for brain development.
Potatoes provide complex carbohydrates for energy, plus fiber, Vitamin C, and potassium.
Cheese adds calcium and healthy fats to support growing bones and brain development.
How to Serve:
For Babies 8–12 months: Serve the tots plain with a side of soft fruit like banana, pear, or avocado slices for a balanced snack or meal.
For Toddlers: Serve with ketchup, yogurt dip, or even a little guacamole for dipping.
Substitutions:
Potato: Swap with sweet potato for extra natural sweetness.
Egg: If you’d like to make these egg-free, try using mashed avocado to help bind the mixture (though the texture will be softer). And you can roll into balls and serve without cooking it in the oven.
Cheese: Any mild, melty cheese works well such as mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or cheddar. For dairy-free, you can use a dairy-free shredded cheese alternative.
